It’s been a busy week for the Ferndale girls on the soccer fields, with a pair of non-conference matchups against two Mendocino County schools.
On Tuesday, the Wildcats traveled to Mendocino and won 7-0, and they followed that with a 4-0 win over Fort Bragg in Ferndale on Wednesday.
Sophomore Macie Hagemann netted the highlight goal of the game at Mendocino to cap an outstanding team move.
Madison Gossi assisted on the goal, taking the ball to the end line and crossing into the box, where Hagemann netted on a one-touch shot.
Madison Hagemann and Teresa Catana each scored twice in the win, while Gossi and Makenzie Chambers both also scored a goal.
Madison Hageman capped a big all-around day with two assists, while her younger sister Macie also had an assist, as did Abigail Gossi and Arlene Glines.
After struggling to score goals at times last season, it looks like it could be a different story this fall.
“We controlled the majority of the game,” head coach Bailey Davy said. “It was a great game to work on moving the ball forward from the back line, working our midfield into the forward attack.
“We have struggled finding the back of the net in past seasons. It’s something we have been working on a ton this summer and it’s been fun to see their hard work come full circle on the field and in our games.”
Ferndale would carry that momentum into Wednesday’s game against the Timberwolves.
Taren Titus, who has been impressing her coaches this fall, turned in a player of the match performance with a big game on defense.
“She read the field really well and was able to cut off any attempt of attack from Fort Bragg down the left wing and even the center,” Davy said. “It was a really impressive performance and saved us from a few mistakes that could have caused us a much larger threat.”
The Wildcats took the lead on an own goal off a shot by Madison Hagemann, before Claire Renner doubled the advantage from the penalty spot.
Madison Gossi would add a third strike off an assist from freshman Macie Hagemann, who has begun her high school in dynamic fashion and added the final goal from the penalty spot.
“The game was pretty choppy. It was hard to find a flow,” Davy said. “The girls held their composure well. Collectively as a team, we were able to take care of the business at hand.”
The Cats will continue a buy week when they travel to play in the Upper Lake tournament on Friday and Saturday.
