It took almost 24 hours to complete the game, but the Del Norte Warriors got their season off to a winning start at McKinleyville High School.
The game was originally scheduled to take place in Crescent City on Friday, but was postponed just three plays in due to a county-wide power outage.
The game resumed at McKinleyville High School on Saturday evening and the Warriors prevailed 20-6.
Del Norte never really looked in danger of losing and ran the ball effectively for much of the evening, but the game was sloppy with way too many penalties, in large part because of the circumstances.
“It was hard for the kids to play after (Friday) night,” Del Norte head coach Darren LaFazio said. “They were all fired up (on Friday).”
Behind the strong running of William McCovey and Tobias Meyers, the Warriors took control with three first-half touchdowns, before both defenses posted a shutout in the second half.
The second half, particularly the third quarter, was marred with way too many penalties and multiple TDs called back.
But LaFazio believes the five-time defending Big 4 champions will learn from their mistakes and play better moving forward.
“You don’t expect stuff like (Friday night),” the Del Norte coach said. “But we’ll be fine. We just have to clean up the mistakes.
“I thought we were physical enough. I think we do things the right way, we just need to clean up the dumb penalties.”
Next up, the Warriors will travel to play Ashland next Friday night.
Humboldt Sports reached out to Hoopa head coach Curtis Kane for some feedback on his team’s performance, but he did not immediately respond.
