The 2024 Big 5 volleyball champions have hit the ground running this fall.
On Thursday night, the Arcata Tigers defeated the visiting Fortuna Huskies in three sets, their second non-conference straight sets win over a Big 5 rival rival this week.
The Arcata girls prevailed 25-8, 25-11, 25-18.
On Tuesday night, the Tigers welcomed McKinleyville to Arcata High and won 25-14, 25-13, 25-13.
With the two victories, Arcata improved to 5-1 on the young season and the players have been impressing longtime head coach Laurie Griffith.
“I’m very happy with how we are starting off the season,” said Griffith, whose team begins conference play at Eureka on Sept. 18.
Several players have stepped up early in the new campaign, showcasing the depth of talent Griffith has available.
Nora Brumbaugh continued to impress in Thursday’s win, finishing with a team-high nine kills, while teammate Pearl Smith added five kills and three aces.
Kyla Kinyon (seven kills), Aliyah Aaron (five aces, five digs) and Harper Appy (21 assists) each also had big nights in the win.
Brumbaugh also led the team in kills in Tuesdays’ win, finishing with 11, while Kinyon also was instrumental and added nine kills and six aces.
Smith chipped in six kills and four aces, while Josie Cunningham finished with 10 digs.
