By Ray Hamill — The Humboldt Eagles 17Us saved their best for last and capped a big summer on the American Legion baseball fields with a big showing at last weekend’s Class A State Tournament in Fairfield.
The Eagles won all six of their games in tournament play, including a 9-4 win over Napa Valley in Monday’s championship game, which was Napa’s first loss of the weekend.
And that earns the Eagles this week’s Humboldt Sports Team of the Week honors.
Under the guidance of head coach John Downey, the local Legion club went undefeated in tournament action, and they came out swinging the bats, racking up 47 runs on 53 hits over the six wins.
After a dominating run through the tournament, five of the Eagles players were named to the all-tournament team.
Kyle Giacone, Alex Jimenez, Garrett Levitt, Ryder Mitchell and Brayden Bermers all made the grade, while catcher Scotty Brogan received an all-tournament honorable mention.
All in all, it was a very impressive showing for the young Eagles, who also shut out the Mudcats 4-0 in Monday’s tournament semifinal.
After clinching the championship, Downey paid tribute to the work his players have put in over the summer months.
“It was a culmination of all of the hard work they’ve put in over the entire summer, and a testament to how hard the’ve worked and how dedicated they’ve been,” said Downey, who added “It was a great way to finish off the summer.”
