Red-hot Barnwell makes it five straight wins in Late Model action

Submitted photo – Brandon Barnwell celebrates his victory after Saturday’s Mid-City Motor World Late Model main event.

Brandon Barnwell is enjoying a near perfect summer at the Redwood Acres Raceway.

On Saturday night, the Fortuna driver solidified his lead atop the Mid-City Motor World Late Models with his fifth straight main event victory.

Barnwell and the Late Models highlighted a packed night of racing action at the local track, presented by Harper Motors.

The night also included the Upstate Bomber Series, Legends, Jr. Legends, mini stocks and BCRA Vintage Midgets, while the Eel River Transportation & Salvage Dirt 4 Bangers made their highly anticipated debut.

But the night belonged to Barnwell more than anyone.

The Late Models season leader timed a 15.600 in qualifying, just a few thousandths of a second from breaking Luke Hall’s track record, which was set earlier this season

Ryun Leazer was the winner of the heat race.

The 65-lap feature saw three early incidents which slowed the race, but an exciting finish saw Joe Bonomini push Barnwell all the way in the final lap.

Jerry Peterson, Leazer and Romeo Venza rounded out the top five.

In Upstate Bomber Series action, Chris Sarvinski paced qualifying with an 18.283, while Bob Mook and T.J. Sorrels were the heat race victors.

The 30-lap main event saw Sam Brown take the checkered flag ahead of Sorrels, Raquel Krupa, Mook and Sarvinski.

The Dirt 4 Bangers enjoyed a good debut with 12 cars showing up.

Matt Merrill was the winner of the first heat while Brown was the winner of the second.

The driver simply known as “Thunder Hawk” was the winner of the 20-lap main event over Brown, Jack Towers, Gene O’Dell and Christian Sanchez.

Fast time for the Legends was Scott Taylor with a 17.858.

Chris Lawrence was the heat race winner and ended up in victory lane in the 20-lap feature as well, beating Taylor, Kassidy Fraser and Mac Collado.

It was also a good night for Phoenix Venza in the Jr. Legends.

Venza set fast time with a 20.282 in qualifying and also took first in both the heat race and main event.

There was also a sweep in mini stick action, with Jarrett Mayo setting a fast time with an 18.941, before also winning the heat race and the main event.

Cole Peterson placed second in the main event, followed across the line by Sorhna Li and Hailey Glass.

The BCRA Vintage Midget heat race was taken by Rich Scenttrini, while Mike Cossey was victorious in the feature over David Ansted, Scettrini and Steve Cossey.

Only three race nights remain on the 2025 schedule for Redwood Acres Raceway.

The next race night is set for August 16 with Leon’s Car Care Center presenting another packed night of action with the Mid-City Motor World Late Models, Legends, Jr. Legends, bombers, limited modifieds, mini stocks and the Eel River Transportation & Salvage Dirt 4 Bangers all scheduled to compete.
