The Humboldt Eagles 17Us closed out the 2025 summer season in style with a perfect run through the American Legion baseball Class A State Tournament over the weekend.

The Eagles traveled to Fairfield and won all six of their tournament games, including a 9-4 win over Napa Valley in Monday’s championship game, which was Napa’s first loss in tournament play.

“It was a long five days, but ultimately the guys played really well,” Eagles head coach John Downey said. “It was a culmination of all of the hard work they’ve put in over the entire summer, and a testament to how hard the’ve worked and how dedicated they’ve been.”

The Eagles opened tournament play on Thursday with a 6-3 win over Breakout Baseball and also defeated tournament hosts FEBA 5-3 on Friday.

They would continue their winning ways and closed out pool play 4-0 after a 13-0 win over Ukiah on Saturday and a 10-1 win over Siskiyous on Sunday.

The Eagles then defeated the Mudcats 4-0 in the tournament semifinal on Monday to advance to the decider later in the day.

Kyle Giacone, Alex Jimenez, Garrett Levitt, Ryder Mitchell and Brayden Bermers were all named to the all-tournament team for the Eagles, while Scotty Brogan received an honorable mention.

Giacone capped an impressive summer with another strong showing in the championship game, holding the previously undefeated Napa Valley in check for much of the game and striking out six in 4.2 innings.

Mitchell led the way at the plate in the final and was 2-for-2, while Willie Nelson drove in a pair of runs.

Bermers played a key role in helping the team reach the championship game, pitching a complete-game seven innings for the win on the mound against the Mudcats and striking out nine.

Jimenez was also hugely influential on the march to the championship and has been one of the team’s most consistent bats all summer.

The recent Eureka High graduate averaged .350 at the plate over the five days.

The hard-hitting Levitt also impressed at the plate and batted .500 with three triples.

The impressive Eagles offense scored a total of 47 runs on 53 hits, with Giacone, Mitchell, Bermers, Jimenez, Grayson Ramey, Wyatt Zeller, Allen Kane, Bryson Burns and James Powell all seeing time on the mound.

Ramey threw a complete game in Sunday’s win over Siskiyous and struck out eight.

Brogan also impressed over the five days and was a rock behind the plate, starting all six games at catcher.

“He worked his tail off in all six games behind the plate,” Downey said.

All in all, it was a strong finish to the summer for this group of players, who should all benefit from the work they put on when they return to their high school teams next spring.

“It was a great way to finish off the summer,” Downey said.
