Top NCS track athletes heading to Fortuna for Redwood Empire meet

By Ray Hamill — One of the largest sporting events the North Coast has seen in recent times will take place at Fortuna High School on Saturday.

Just one week after the Huskies hosted the H-DNL championships, they will be even busier this weekend as they get set to host this year’s North Coast Section Redwood Empire championships.

The meet is one of four NCS championship meets this weekend and will include the top athletes from the Big 5 schools and throughout the Redwood Empire.

The top athletes in the Little 4 will travel to Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa for the NCS Class A meet.

Athletes from dozens of schools will travel to Fortuna and it should be a highly competitive meet.

This will be the first time the Redwood Empire championships have been held in the area since Del Norte High hosted the prestigious meet back in 2008.

And several local coaches have worked hard behind the scenes to make sure it happened, including Arcata coach Davita McGoldrick, Fortuna coach Vince Zinselmeir, Del Norte coach Taylor Duncan and former Eureka coach Scott Pesch, along with countless volunteers.

Admission will be $12 for adults and $5 for seniors, students and children with adults.

Tickets can be purchased online through GoFan.co, or at the gate.

The action gets under way at 9 a.m. with some of the field events, with the boys 4x400m relay race closing out a busy day of competition at 3:14 p.m.
