Loggers top the Huskies, keep Lakin tournament hopes on track

The Eureka Loggers got back to .500 in conference play with a 10-3 win over Fortuna in Big 5 baseball at Belotti Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Loggers scored in each of the first five innings to take control and out-hit the visitors 13-4 for the game.

Wit the win, they improved to 4-4 in the Big 5 and 6-9 on the season, while the Huskies remain winless sin conference play at 0-7 and are 3-13 overall.

Five different Eureka played finished with multiple hits, including Garrett Levitt, who was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored and also reached base on a hit by pitch.

Michael Jewell also was 2-for-2 in the win with an RBI and a run, while freshman Bryson Burns finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Jesse Vasquez and Alex Jimenez each also finished 2-for-4, while Matt Pleasant added a double and scored twice and Ty Crawford and Bobby Lee Tatum each had a base hit.

Royce Olson pitched six innings for the win on the mound, giving up just three hits and five walks and striking out nine.

Sebastian Standish threw one inning in relief, giving up one hit. 

Trailing 4-0 going into the third inning, the Huskies cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs.

That, however, was as close as they would get.

Sophomore Tanner Franklin continued to impress and finished 2-for-3 with pair of RBIs, while also walking to reach base three times.

E’Angelo Payne and Casey More each also had a hit to round out a four-hit team performance.

Mariqus Ludd added an RBI and scored a run, reaching base on a pair of walks.

Next up, the Huskies will play a doubleheader at McKinleyville on Saturday, while the Loggers will play a key doubleheader against Eureka on the same day with big Charles Lakin tournament implications.

First pitch for both doubleheaders is set for 11 a.m.
