Pitchers set the tone as Wildcats sweep road doubleheader

The Wildcats got a pair of much-needed baseball games in this week, as they continue their fast start to the season.

The Ferndale boys traveled to Weaverville to play Trinity and Redding Christian and swept the doubleheader, improving to 4-0.

The Cats cruised to a 20-3 win over Trinity and followed that with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Lions in what was their toughest matchup of the early season so far.

Pitchers Jonah Anderson and Prescott Langer got the victories on the mound, with the latter very impressive against a quality Lions lineup.

The junior ace gave up just one earned run on three hits and three walks in five innings work and struck out seven.

“Prescott was lights out,” Ferndale head coach Justin Andersen said. “Hopefully he showed a sign of what’s to come this year. They’re a pretty good team.”

Langer also impressed at the plate in the win and finished 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run, while Anderson and Tanner Pidgeon each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pidgeon also scored a run.

Two freshmen also impressed for the Cats, with Cade Renner going 1-for-2 and Cash Mobley driving in a key run on a sac fly.

Luke Dixon also had an RBI in the win.

Anderson led the way in the opening win, both on the mound and at the plate.

The senior pitched four scoreless innings for the victory and did not give up any hits or walks, while striking out five.

He also provided the offensive highlight of the game with a home run and scored a pair runs.

“Jonah looked good at the plate and on the mound,” Andersen said.

Mobley and teammate Tristen Titus each also impressed at the plate in that game and both finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs.

Mobley also scored three runs.

Last year’s Little 4 MVP Parker Prior added a pair of base hits and an RBI.

After having several games canceled early in the season, the Ferndale players are beginning to find their groove as they get set for their conference openers next week.

“We’re kind of seeing them kick the rust off and jelling like we have the last couple of years,” the head coach said. “And the younger players that are getting a chance are taking advantage of it.

“I’m excited to see where they fit in this year.”

Next up, the Wildcats are scheduled to play rivals and neighbors, the Fortuna Huskies, on Saturday at 1 p.m. at either Scotia or Ferndale High.

They open the Little 4 with a pair of games against St. Bernard’s next week, traveling to St. Bernard’s on Tuesday and hosting the Crusaders on Thursday.
