BASEBALL ROUNDUP — H-DNL teams get in some much-needed games

After all the recent rain and cancelled games, it was good to see several H-DNL teams get some games in this weekend.

Three local schools traveled to play at the Yreka tournament, with the Del Norte Warriors winning all three of their games on the way to the tournament title.

The Warriors defeated Etna 9-3 on Thursday and Mt. Shasta 8-2 on Friday, before closing out tournament play with a 4-2 win over St. Bernard’s on Saturday.

The loss was the first on the season for the Panthers, who are now 7-1.

The Arcata Tigers also were in action this weekend, splitting a doubleheader at Kelseyville on Friday.

The Tigers won the opener 10-1, before dropping a close game two by a score of 7-6.

They are now 5-2.

Ben Lukens had another big game on the mound on the way to victory in game one, while Anthony Ebert continued to showcase his power with a home run.

The Fortuna Huskies had a scheduled doubleheader at Point Arena on Saturday, winning game one 12-2 in five innings to go to 2-4 on the season.

No details were immediately available for game two.

The Crusaders, meanwhile, managed just two hits against senior pitcher Preston Daniels and the Warriors.

“Del Norte ace Preston Daniels kept us off balance with a great fastball/slider combination and pitched an outstanding game,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said.

Tyler Maples got both SB hits and was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Tyler Hinrichs got the start on the mound for the Crusaders and pitched two innings for the loss.

The junior allowed two earned runs on two hits and three walks and struck out one.

Quentin Ikeya pitched four good innings in relief, giving up just one earned run on two hits and two walks and striking out one.

“Tyler Maples stayed hot at the plate,” said St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin, who added “Quentin Ikeya had a great day on the mound, pitching four solid innings of relief and gave us a chance to stay in the game.”

Overall, Tomlin was happy to get the games in as his players continue to build momentum towards league play.

“It was a productive weekend as we played three close games that will make us a better team moving forward,” the coach said.

Next up, the Crusaders play at Fortuna on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.

The Huskies, meanwhile, started strong in their opener at Point Arena and never looked back, scoring five runs in the top of the first to take control.

Tanner Franklin continued his impressive start to the new season and had two hits in the win, as did Casey Moore and Chandler Crenshaw, with the latter two players also driving in a pair of runs each.

Junior Alex Sharkey also had a good game and was 1-for-2 with four RBIs, while E’Angelo Payne, Conner McClendon, Mariqus Ludd, Cage Collins and Blayne Barrote each also had a base hit in the win.
