St. Bernard’s girls top Big 5 rival in Monday softball matchup

After going 1-2 at the Cloverdale tournament over the weekend, the St. Bernard’s girls got the better of a Big 5 rival in softball on Monday.

The defending Little 4 champions continued their preparation for the upcoming conference schedule with an 8-4 win over the Arcata Tigers.

With the win, the Crusaders and new head coach Hailey Wilson improved to 2-2 on the young season.

Sophomore pitcher Oni Orcutt got the win in the circle.

Orcutt pitched all seven innings and allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out one.

The sophomore standout also was one of six St. Bernard’s girls to hit successfully in the win.

Logan Tallman led the SB girls at the plate and finished 2-for-4, while teammate Bailee White went 1-for-4 with a double.

Orcutt, Sahara Tupua, Kyna Tupua and Makinsey Lemley each also finished the game 1-for-4.

The Crusaders opened their season at the Cloverdale tournament over the weekend.

They defeated University out of San Francisco 15-3 and dropped a pair of one-run games.

They lost to the host school by a score of 6-5 and fell 13-12 to Berean Christian.

They are scheduled to play at Fortuna on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Crusaders will begin the defense of their Little 4 championship early next month.
