Lukens, Tigers shut out Las Plumas in five-inning season opener

The Arcata Tigers enjoyed an impressive start to the new high school baseball season with a shutout victory at the Foothill tournament on Friday.

Senior Ben Lukens set the tone on the mound with a complete-game one-hitter to lead the team to an 11-0 win over Las Plumas in five innings.

“That was a good start,” Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti said of Lukens’ performance. “He commanded the zone pretty well.”

A young Arcata lineup that includes three starting freshmen racked up seven hits, led by Tanner Kees and Anthony Ebert.

Kees finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Ebert was 2-for-4 with a double.

Ghisetti said he was happy with the players’ approach at the plate.

“I thought we competed very well,” the long-time coach said. “We started three freshmen and my seniors led the kids and made sure they were on track.

“And Lukens set the tone on the mound.”

Freshman Emilio Medina got his first high school base hit and finished the game 1-for-2, while AJ Greenway was 1-for-1 and Jonah O’Brien was 1-for-3.

The Tigers will continue tournament action with a doubleheader on Saturday.

They play Foothill at 9 a.m. and Oroville at 11:30 a.m.
