The Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team is headed back to the postseason.
A 77-72 win at Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday, coupled with other results over the weekend, means the Jacks are now guaranteed a top-six finish and have qualified for next week’s California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, the conference announced on Monday.
And they achieved it with two games to spare.
In head coach Chris Tifft’s second year in charge of the program, the Jacks have won eight of their last 11 games and are now 15-10 overall and 11-9 in conference and tied for fourth.
The Jacks are also guaranteed a first winning season since 2018-19, and they are closing in on a first conference campaign above .500 since 2016.
This year the Jacks have also received votes in the West Regional rankings three times and cracked the Top-10 poll twice for the first time since 2021.
The Humboldt men are also one of two teams (Chico State being the other) to take down first place and nationally ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills.
They also earned a first season sweep over Cal State San Bernardino since the 2015-16 season, and beat CSUSB on the road for the first time since 2017.
This season they also defeated Cal Poly Pomona for the first time since December, 2018, snapping an 11-game losing streak to the Broncos and posted the program’s longest winning streak (six games) since February 2015.
The Jacks will close out the regular season with home games against Cal State San Marcos on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and against Sonoma State on Saturday (5 p.m.).
Saturday will be senior night and will feature free general admission for fan appreciation.
