The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a fifth straight win on Tuesday night, defeating Lassen 71-63 at CR.
The Corsairs, who are guaranteed a home playoff game as Golden Valley Conference champs, will find out their playoff seed and opening opponent on Sunday.
On Tuesday, three days after clinching a fourth conference championship in five seasons, they overcame the challenge of a Lassen team that has caused them matchup problems this year.
Even shorthanded, the Cougars gave their hosts a battle.
“Lassen was missing their two leading scorers and brought his a real fight tonight,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “They are a nightmare matchup for us this year from a tactical perspective. They deserve so much credit.”
Mason Mottashed was one of three CR sophomores honored before tip off and followed that with another strong performance, , scoring a team-high 24 points, including eight 3-pointers.
“Mason Mottashed again played with such polish and toughness,” Bisio said. “His six 3-pointers in the second half were all timely and dripping with confidence.
“He’s coming down the home stretch here looking like a professional junior college player.”
Fellow sophomores Isidro Garcia and Brandon Lucas also were honored before the game.
Alfonso Medina added 14 points in the win, while Josh Neal had 13 points and Ty Dahlin chipped in 12 points.
The CR men, who trailed 30-27 at halftime, hit 12 3-pointers on the night.
“We weren’t ourselves for most of the night but we stayed calm and eventually put the puzzle together,” Bisio added. “Really proud of the way we stayed together through some serious turbulence.”
The win avenged an earlier conference loss at Lassen.
CR closed out the regular season with an overall record of 21-7 and were 8-2 in conference play, winning the title by two games.
