File photo – The CR men took another big step towards a conference championship on Saturday.

The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team moved one step closer to a fourth Golden Valley Conference championship in five years on Saturday.

The Corsairs traveled to Siskiyous and won 79-73 to move clear atop the GVC standings with just two games remaining.

The CR men are now 6-2 in conference play and 19-7 overall.

Second-place Butte did not play on Saturday and is half a game back of the Corsairs with a record of 5-2 with three games remaining.

Having defeated Butte twice in conference play, the CR men hold the tiebreaker advantage and can clinch the title with wins in their final two games no matter what Butte does.

The Corsairs’ two remaining games are both at home, against Feather River next Saturday and against Lassen three days later.

The CR women also were in action on Saturday and lost 69-57 at Siskiyous.

The Corsairs are now 1-6 in the GVC and 8-15 overall.

It was a disappointing day for the Cal Poly Humboldt men’s team, which saw a six-game winning streak end in a 65-62 loss to Stanislaus State at Lumberjack Arena.

The loss drops the Humboldt men to 9-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 13-8 overall.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women fared better and won their second straight game, defeating Stanislaus 68-51.

They are now 6-10 in conference and 7-15 overall.
