St. Bernard’s senior Laila Florvilus is enjoying an outstanding winter on the basketball courts and is getting noticed beyond the Redwood Curtain.
On Tuesday, Florvilus was named this week’s CalHiSports NorCal Girls State Basketball Player of the Week.
According to a report by CalHiSports Harold Abend, “it was like two more days at the office for Florvilus,” who had a pair of big performances against Ferndale in the Little 4 on Friday and in a non-conference showdown against Trinity in a matchup of two of the top D-5 teams in the state on Saturday.
The senior had 26 points, nine rebounds and six steals against Ferndale in a game the Crusaders won 65-43 to clinch this year’s Little championship.
She followed that 22 points,14 rebounds, six steals and four assists against Trinity, leading the Crusaders to a 57-47 victory.
According to MaxPreps, St. Bernard’s is the No. 3 Division-5 team in the state, while Trinity is No. 5, and both teams will be expected to make a deep playoff run.
Abend went on to note that Florvilus “has an outside chance of hitting the 2,000-point scoring plateau for her career if St. Bernard’s makes another deep playoff run as she currently sits at 1,747 career points.”
Florvilus is a two-time defending co-conference MVP and was named CalHiSports Division-IV State Player of the Year in 2024 after helping to lead the Crusaders to the D-4 state championship, which was the first-ever for an H-DNL basketball program, boys or girls.
Florvilus and the Crusaders will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host South Fork in a Little 4 showdown, as they look to secure the conference title outright.
Wednesday will also be senior night for the SB girls, who will honor Florvilus and fellow seniors Aliyah Vigil and Jocelyn Sundberg before the game.
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Crusaders are 23-1 overall and can secure a 25-win regular season with victories over the Cubs and Hoopa (on Friday).
