Former Big 5 MVP Isis Poteet making an impact with Vaqueros

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Isis Poteet in action for the Eureka Loggers last season.

Former Big 5 MVP Isis Poteet is enjoying a big debut season on the college basketball courts.

The 2024 Eureka High graduate, who helped lead the Loggers to a Big 5 and Dick Niclai championship double in her senior season, is playing this winter for Santa Barbara City College women, who are among the best teams in the state right now.

Poteet has started 19 of 22 games for the Vaqueros, who are ranked No. 14 in the state and have a record of 17-5.

They currently sit second in the Western State-North Conference with a record of 7-2.

Poteet leads the team in scoring with 13.2 points a game and is shooting a very impressive 49 percent from the floor.

She also is making her presence felt in the boards and leads the Vaqueros with an impressive 8.6 rebounds a game.

On Saturday, however, the Vaqueros saw their conference championship hopes take a hit with a 66-29 loss to leaders Moorpark, the No. 4 team in the state.

The loss was just the team’s second in its last 10 games — both to Moorpark — but the Vaqueros appear primed to make some noise in the upcoming playoffs.

Poteet scored a season-high 26 points in a 69-58 victory over Santa Ana in December and has scored in double digits in three of her last five games including a 20-point outing against Oxnard three weeks ago.

The former Loggers standout, however, missed Saturday’s big game after taking a hard hit to the head in a win over Cuesta earlier in the week.

And she was obviously missed in the lopsided loss to the high-flying Moorpark women.

Hopefully, she will be back on the court soon.

Poteet’s former Eureka teammate Kaitlin Giacone, who was named Big 5 Co-MVP with Poteet last winter, also is enjoying a big debut season on the college courts at College of the Sequoias.

The Giants are the No. 1 team in the state and unbeaten with a record of 22-0.
