The Eureka Loggers took a break from the Big 5 with a trip to Shasta for a boys basketball game on Saturday.

But it was the home team that started fast, outscoring the Loggers 31-18 in the opening half on the way to a 57-45 win.

With the loss, the Eureka boys dropped to 14-7 on the season.

The second half was far more even, but unfortunately for the Loggers they were unable to cut into the deficit.

The Loggers, who have been battling sickness all week, were led by the always consistent Elijah Estrada, who scored a team-high 12 points.

Sophomore Xavier De La Rosa also continued to impress and also finished with 12 points as well as seven rebounds.

Will Mooney added 11 points for the Loggers.

A hot-shooting Shasta team hit eight 3-pointers in the win, as the  Wolves improved to 10-12 on the season.

The Loggers, who have lost three straight games, including Big 5 defeats to Arcata and McKinleyville last week, will try to get back to winning ways when they host South Fork in non-conference action on Monday night.

Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Eureka boys return to Big 5 action on Thursday night when they host Del Norte.
