BOYS POWER RANKINGS — Tigers still No. 1 after rivalry game win

By Ray Hamill — H-DNL conference leaders St. Bernard’s and Arcata are the biggest local movers in this week’s North Coast Rankings, according to MaxPreps.

Both teams enjoyed big statement wins in conference play over the weekend, as each took over sole possession of top spot in their conference standings.

The Crusaders, who defeated Little 4 rival South Fork on Friday night and came into Wednesday night’s game against McKinleyville on a five-game winning streak, move up 11 spots to No. 46 in the overall NCS rankings and remain steady at No. 1 in the section and at No. 2 in the state among Division-6 teams.

Redding Christian, which handed the Crusaders two of their three losses this season, is the No. 1 ranked D-6 school in the state.

The Arcata boys, meanwhile,  move up seven spots to No. 29 overall in the NCS out of 162 programs after a big win over Big 5 rival McKinleyville on Friday night.

The Tigers also move up one spot to No. 7 in NCS Division 3 and four spots to No. 11 in the state D-3 rankings.

Just four local teams are ranked din the top 50 overall in the NCS.

In addition to No. 29 Arcata and No. 46 St. Bernard’s, Eureka is No. 38 and McKinleyville is No. 40.

The Loggers are also No. 9 in NCS Division 3, followed by Del Norte at No. 14, while the Panthers are No. 8 in Division 4, followed by No. 19 Fortuna.

In Division 5, Hoopa is No. 9, followed by South Fork at No. 14, while Ferndale is No. 8 in Division 6.

This week’s Humboldt Sports Power Rankings, meanwhile, sees the Arcata boys retain the top spot after closing out the first half of their conference schedule with four wins in four games.

This is the fourth straight week the Tigers have held the No. 1 spot in our rankings.

McKinleyville remains at No. 2 after a six-point win over No. 3 St. Bernard’s on Wednesday night, with Eureka holding steady at No. 4 and Del Norte at No. 5.
