Jacks sweep conference doubleheader to kickstart busy weekend

The Lumberjacks enjoyed a successful start to a busy weekend when they swept a conference doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino on the basketball court at Lumberjack Arena on Thursday night.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women got the night started with their second straight win, defeating the Coyotes 76-67.

With the win, the Humboldt women improved to 4-3 in conference play and 5-8 overall.

Four players scored in double digits for the home team, led by Riley Sanz’s 18 points.

Teammate Andjela Pavicevic added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Kendall Pickford finished with 12 points and Kyori Lloyd chipped in 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Kaiija Lesane dished out a team-high seven assists.

The Humboldt men capped a good night for the hosts with an 80-77 win and improved to 3-4 in conference and 7-5 overall.

Humboldt’s Kalib LaCount scored a team-high 22 points in the win and also had a team-best four assists, while teammate Rob Diaz III added 21 points while going 8 of 10 from the free-throw line.

LaCount hit a buzzer-beater from just inside half court secure the dramatic win, which was the Jacks’ first over the Coyotes since February 2019.

It snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series.

Humboldt’s Kyle Frelow also impressed and finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Josiah Sanders chipped in 12 points and also had eight rebounds.

Both Humboldt teams will continue conference play on Saturday when they host Cal Poly Pomona in a doubleheader, with the women starting at 1 p.m. and the men following at 3.

Also this weekend, the Cal Poly Humboldt men’s wrestling team will host Simpson University on Friday night at 6 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.

The match will be the first in the sport at Cal Poly Humboldt in 33 years after the program was recently reinstated.
