College of the Redwoods guard Ty Dahlin began conference play this week with an outstanding individual effort.

The Corsairs standout, who is one of several players to impress for the team this season, finished with a stat line that few players in the state have matched this year.

The freshman, who hails from South Medford, helped lead the Corsairs to an 87-74 win over one of their biggest rivals in the Golden Valley Conference, Butte College.

The CR men rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit in the conference opener as the Roadrunners’ size and physicality caused a lot of problems.

“We basically had to scrap the entire game plan on both sides of the ball within the first 10 minutes of the game,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said after the win. “So much praise for our guys’ resiliency and adaptability. Butte forced us into doing things we barely even practice.

“(Their) size and physicality really imposed itself on us early.”

Former Fortuna Husky Alfonso Medina scored a team-high 26 points in the win, but Dahlin’s contributions were every bit as key.

Dahlin finished with a triple-double, scoring 18 points and adding 14 rebounds and 11 assists.

According to the CR athletics department, it was just the second recorded triple-double in the state so far this season.

With the win, the Corsairs improved to 14-5 on the season.

Dahlin and his teammates will try to keep their fast start to conference going when they play at Shasta on Saturday afternoon.
