Busy week in store for local college basketball teams

By Ray Hamill — It’s going to be a busy week for local college basketball here on the North Coast, with several games on tap over the next few days.

Both College of the Redwoods teams will tip off the Golden Valley Conference with a home doubleheader on Wednesday night.

The Corsairs will welcome Butte College to Eureka, with the men’s team getting the action started at 5 p.m., followed by the women at 7.

The CR men have won three straight games and are 13-5 on the season, while the Butte men’s team is 10-8.

The CR women, meanwhile, are 7-9, while the Butte women open conference play with a record of 8-8.

Both CR teams will also be in action this weekend, when they travel to Shasta for a Saturday doubleheader, with the men tipping off at 1 and the women at 3.

The Cal Poly Humboldt teams will also be in action this week, as they get set for a pair of home conference doubleheaders.

The Jacks will host Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.

Fresh off a 59-44 win at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, the Humboldt women are 3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 4-8 overall.

They get Thursday night’s action under way at 5:30 against a San Bernardino team that is 2-4 in conference and 3-8 overall.

The Humboldt men’s team also won at Monterey on Saturday and is now 2-4 in conference play and 6-5 overall.

The San Bernardino men are third in the conference standings with a record of 4-2 (11-4 overall).

Thursday’s men’s game starts at 7:30 p.m.

The local action continues on Saturday when both Humboldt teams welcome Cal Poly Pomona to Lumberjack Arena, with the women’s game set for 1 p.m. and the men playing at 3. 

The Pomona women are 5-1 in conference and 10-2 overall, while the Pomona men are 3-3 in conference and 8-4 overall.
