Del Norte boys drop Enterprise tournament opener in overtime

The Del Norte Warriors saw a seven-game wining streak end on the opening day at the Enterprise boys basketball tournament on Friday.

But it was a close one.

The Warriors, who had not lost a game since Dec. 12, fell to University Prep in overtime by a score of 68-65.

The Panthers secured the win on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the extra period.

Mistakes proved costly for the Del Norte boys, who had 19 turnovers compared to 15 assists.

However, the players showed plenty of fight after a disappointing second quarter that saw them score just six points.

“I was proud of my team,” said Del Norte head coach Cris Rice, whose players battled back from a six-point deficit in overtime to tie the game late.

The Warriors also battled back from a late six-point deficit in regulation to force the extra period.

With his team trailing by six with 1:30 remaining in the game, Del Norte sophomore Damian Escalera had a four-point play, before teammate Lyon Rigden added two clutch free throws to tie the game.

Both Rigden and Micheal Webster helped key the late rally and “were big down the stretch,” according to Rice.

Webster scored a team-high 26 points, including four 3-pointers, and also pulled down eight rebounds, while Rigden added 17 points.

Sawyer Fry also had a good game and finished with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Aidan Rice also had six rebounds and a team-best six assists, while Tanner Dowd added five boards.

The loss was just the third of the season for the Warriors, who dropped to 11-3.

They will continue tournament play on Friday.

The Warriors tip off the Big 5 next week when they play at Arcata on Wednesday night.
