By Ray Hamill — It’s been an impressive start to the new season for the St. Bernard’s girls basketball team, which is off to a 6-0 start.

On Tuesday afternoon, however, the Crusaders and their coaches took a quick break from practice to receive their Humboldt Sports co-Team of the Year award.

Earlier this year, the SB girls were named the 2024 high school team of the year along with the Ferndale Wildcats football team.

Both programs won a state championship during the 2023/24 school year.

The SB girls defeated Grossmont 47-29 in the Division-4 state championship game in March and became the first-ever H-DNL team, boys or girls, to win a state title in the sport.

St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin, who also coaches the school’s football and baseball teams, also was presented with the Humboldt Sports 2024 Coach of the Year trophy.

Jeff Meyer of Mendes Supply Company, one of this year’s award sponsors, was on hand to present the St. Bernard’s girls and Tomlin with their trophies.

A big thank you to all of this year’s award sponsors, which also includes DelReka Distributing, The Humboldt Fence Company, Bode Construction and Chris Prior of Coldwell Banker Cutten Realty.
