Local wrestlers continue to impress at McKinleyville Invitational

The McKinleyville Panthers continued their impressive start to the new wrestling season with another strong showing at their own tournament this past weekend.

One week after a third-place finish at Del Norte’s Battle at the Border tournament, the Panthers placed second over the weekend.

And they weren’t the only H-DNL school to impress, as the local league took four of the top-five spots in the team competition.

The tournament was won by West Park with 195 points, followed by the Panthers (167.5), Hoopa (134), Arcata (120) and Fortuna (118).

The powerhouse Del Norte Warriors placed eighth but had several of their top wrestlers competing elsewhere.

Hoopa led the way with four individual winners on the day, all of them in the upper weights, while the Panthers had three wrestlers win their divisions and Arcata had two.

McKinleyville’s Brandon Hillegeist placed first at 120 pounds, while his teammates Thurman Henderson (126) and Lucas Dickey (175) each also placed first in their brackets.

Hoopa’s Chago Moon also placed first at 157, as did his teammates Donald Hostler (165), Raymond Baldy (190) and Antonio Correa (215).

Rounding out the local winners, Arcata’s Silven Yoder placed first at 132 and his teammate Isaiah Bell placed first at 144, while Fortuna’s Landon Leon placed first at 138.

Seven H-DNL wrestlers also placed second in their brackets, including Arcata’s Tyler Shelton (113); Eureka’s Logan Robertson (120) and Knolin Callender (285); McKinleyville’s Kevin Smith (138) and Leo Cosce (150); and Fortuna’s Tyson Evanow (144) and Brayden Timmerman (175).

And rounding out a good day for the local schools, nine league wrestlers placed third in their weight classes, including Ferndale’s Cash Mobley (113) and Preston Killingsworth (144); Foruna’s Eli Hampton (126) and Jack Chipman (157); McKinleyville’s Damarius Thompson (132) and Francisco Mendez (138); Arcata’s Jacob Mola (150) and Gavin Smith (165); and Del Norte’s Aaron Burger (190).

Several H-DNL girls also impressed in tournament action, with the local league taking home a pair of winners in the four weight divisions.

Hoopa’s Pamela Houston continued her impressive start to the new season.

One week after placing first in Del Norte, Houston continued to roll with another tournament win at 125, while Arcata’s Rory Bickmore also won for the second straight week at 155.

The H-DNL took three of the top four spots in the 115 weight class.

Hoopa’s Ande Lewis placed second, ahead of Arcata’s Jada Lusk in third and Zoe Cappuccio in fourth.

Hoopa’s Aryana Mck-Drake also placed fourth at 125, while Arcata’s Aleta Stubblefield and Maile Russell were second and third at 135.

At 155, Arcata’s Lillian Afrida placed second, followed by Hoopa’s Audrina Mace in fourth and Arcata’s Melody Arguelles in fifth.
