Lumberjacks split conference doubleheader against Cal State East Bay

The Cal Poly Humboldt women made it two straight wins on the basketball court after rallying for a 63-61 win over Cal State East Bay at Lumberjack Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Humboldt men, however, lost later in the day, falling to the same school by a score of 81-76.

Kaiija Lesane led the Humboldt women with a game-high 24 points and added eight rebounds, as the Jacks battled back from a seven-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter.

The Jacks outscored the visitors 23-14 in the final period as they improved to 3-5 on the season and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Kendall Pickford also had a good game for the home team and added 10 points and six rebounds, while Kyori Lloyd finished with 10 points.

Teammate Dailani Richardson chipped in nine points, while Jadis Watson made her presence felt in the paint and had a team-best 10 boards.

East Bay started the stronger of the two teams and held a 10-point lead after the opening quarter but the Jacks held them to five points in the second and trailed by just four at halftime.

The Humboldt men, meanwhile, saw a four-point halftime lead disappear in the second half and lost for the second time in three conference games.

The Jacks, who were coming off an impressive win over San Francisco State on Thursday night, dropped to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in the CCAA.

Josiah Sanders led the home team with a team-high 24 points and eight rebounds and was one of three Humboldt players to score in double digits.

Kalib LaCount and Rob Diaz III each added 14 points while Aidan Fowler chipped in eight points.

Both Humboldt teams will be back in action when they travel to play Chico State next Saturday.
