South Fork boys continue their fast start at Redwood Classic

The South Fork Cubs improved to 3-0 on the young season with a pair of wins on the opening day of the Redwood Classic boys basketball tournament at Anderson valley High School on Wednesday.

The Cubs defeated Laytonville 71-29 in their tourney opener and followed that with a 79-62 win over Round Valley later in the day.

Senior Wesley Way had a big day for the Cubs, especially in a hard-fought showdown against a quality Round Valley team that was competitive for much of the game.

“He played absolutely phenomenal all night,” South Fork head coach Taylor Morrow said of Way, who led all scorers with 21 points and appears set for a big senior campaign.

Shawn Schmidt returned to the lineup after missing the season opener through injury and had an immediate impact, finishing with 14 points against Round Valley.

According to Morrow, he had a “very balanced game,” and it was “great to have him back on the court.”

The Covelo school gave the Cubs a good early-season test.

“Definitely one of the better Round Valley teams we have played in the last couple of years,” Morrow said. “But our pace and the pressure we put on the rim made it so Round Valley was in foul trouble.”

Zakunda Fansler and Trevor Hunt each also had 11 points in that win.

The earlier game against Laytonville wasn’t as close as the Corsairs won comfortably to get the tournament off to an impressive start.

Morrow utilized several players in the win, including some of the younger Cubs.

Freshman Sheyne Casey finished with 11 points and Mason Bell had eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, as all of the South Fork players scored.

“It allowed some of my younger players show what they can really do,” Morrow said.

Next up, the Cubs will play in the tournament semifinals on Friday night.

“It’s nice to get a couple of games under out belt now and we continue to build on our foundation,” the coach added.
