By Ray Hamill — The Arcata Tigers will play for a first-ever North Coast Section football championship next week after a dominating victory on Friday night.
Hosting Petaluma at the Redwood Bowl in the Division-6 semifinal, the Tigers scored on 10 of their 11 possessions for the night and cruised to a 69-34 win.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw the lead change hands multiple times, the home fans saw their team pull away after the break in a game that was decided long before the final buzzer sounded.
This was arguably the greatest win in program history and if the Tigers play as well as this again next week they will be tough to stop.
Especially on offense.
Six different Arcata players scored a touchdown in the win, including Luke Lemke, who continued his remarkable season.
The standout junior quarterback accounted for five of his team’s 10 TDs, including passing for two and running in for three more.
Running back Alex Greenway also found the end zone three times, while teammates Lennon Gieder and Dayquan Dunn each had a TD reception and running back Tony Buchanan added a late TD run to cap a memorable night for the Little 4 champs.
The Tigers have more than lived up to their billing as the top seed in this year’s Division-6 bracket and have now scored an incredible 131 points in their two playoff wins.

Next up is a date with No. 2 seed Miramone, which defeated Benicia 6-0 in the other semifinal on Friday night.
The NCS playoffs continue for the local schools on Saturday afternoon, when the Ferndale Wildcats host Piedmont in the Division-7 semifinals with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
