By Ray Hamill — The future of Sequoia FC soccer appears to be in good hands.
The local travel club’s U10 boys teams recently closed out a strong season competing in the NorCal League with a pair of victories and finished second in the final league standings.
Over the weekend, the young Sequoia boys defeated the Black Oaks Youth Soccer Club 5-3 on Saturday and followed that with a 9-3 win over Mendocino County Soccer Academy 9-3 on Sunday.
The two season-closing wins lifted the Sequoia boys to 8-1.
What’s perhaps most impressive about this group of players is how quickly they came together since they first began practicing in August.
“It’s been fun watching this great group of boys come together and have such success in such a short amount of time,” head coach Eddie Garcia said. “Mainly it’s been amazing watching them improve together, and we are excited for what they are capable of accomplishing.”
The young squad includes Bazil Backman, Cal Willey, Cirrus Villarreul, Haiden O’Donnell, Jack Valadao, James Holt, Liam Burtchett, Maddux Graney, Madison Cone, Malakai Mayeeh and Kai Mykham.
Assistant coaches Brice Burtchett, Michal J Obah and Matt Cone also played a key role in the team’s quick development, as did team manager Kate Burtchett.
Sequoia FC will hold tryouts for players born between 2006 and 2010 on Dec. 3 and 5 at the Bear River Casino Resort field.
Tryouts for girls take place from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. and for girls boys from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
