NCS SOCCER — H-DNL girls secure all four semifinal spots; Mack boys upset Fortuna

The H-DNL won a North Coast Section championship in girls fall soccer on Saturday, the only question is which school will take home the pennant.

In the Division-1 girls bracket, the Arcata Tigers defeated Willits 2-0 and the Fortuna girls rolled over Clear Lake 9-0.

The two shutout victories follow wins for both Eureka and Del Norte on Friday, setting up a pair of all-local NCS semifinals on Wednesday.

The No. 1 seeded Loggers, who comfortably got the better of Upper Lake 7-0 in their quarterfinal, will now host No. 4 Arcata at Washington Elementary School at 2:30 p.m.

Later in the day at 7 p.m., the No. 2 Huskies will host No. 6 Del Norte, which defeated Credo 2-1 in overtime on Friday night.

The championship game will be played somewhere in Humboldt County next weekend.

Only one H-DNL team remains in the chase for this year’s boys Division-1 section championship.

On Saturday, the No. 7 McKinleyville Panthers continued their impressive postseason run with a 3-0 win at No. 2 Fortuna.

“Hats off to McKinleyville, they played well,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said. “I’m super proud of my seniors and what they have meant to our program.

“I wish McKinleyville the best of luck.”

The loss ends the season for the Huskies, who won this year’s H-DNL.

The No. 9 Eureka Loggers and No. 6 Arcata Tigers also were in action on Saturday.

The Eureka boys fell 8-0 at No. 1 Head-Royce in Oakland, while the Tigers lost 3-2 at No. 3 Making Waves Academy in Richmond.

McKinleyville, which also defeated Gateway earlier in the week, will travel to play Making Waves on Wednesday with a place in this year’s championship game on the line.
