With just one loss in their last six games, the Lumberjacks have secured a playoff spot for the third straight year in women’s soccer.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women closed out the regular season with a 2-0 win over Sonoma State in Arcata on Thursday.

The win secured the fifth seed for the upcoming California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, which kicks off on Sunday.

The Jacks open in a quarterfinal showdown against No. 4 Stanislaus State in Turlock.

Next week’s tournament semifinals and final will be hosted by the Jacks at College Creek Field, whether they make it that far or not.

Frida Duran Arellano and Heidi Munoz both scored early in Thursday’s win, as a determined Humboldt side secured both points.

“I’m so proud of the team today,” head coach Grant Landy said. “They wanted it from the opening whistle. Getting early goals really set the tone for the match.

“We dropped our first two conference games this year, so to battle back to make the conference tournament is a testament to the team’s resolve and mentality.”

Duran Arellano now has seven goals of the season, which is the fourth most in the CCAA.

The winner of Sunday’s game in Turlock will play No. 1 seed Cal Poly Pomona in next Friday’s tournament semifinal.

The Jacks closed out the regular season with a record of 8-7-3, including a 5-4-2 mark in conference play.

Sunday’s game is set for noon.
