JV FOOTBALL — Wildcats claim L4 title; Big 4 goes down to the wire

One of the two JV H-DNL football championships was decided last weekend, while the other will be decided on the final day of the season this weekend.

With a 29-14 win over McKinleyville on Saturday, the Ferndale Wildcats clinched the Little 4 championship outright.

The win was the fifth straight for the Cats, who improved to 5-0 in the Little 4 and 7-2 on the season.

The young Ferndale players can close out a perfect conference campaign with a win over the Arcata Tigers on Saturday.

Despite Saturday’s loss, which was just the second in their last seven games, the Panthers are guaranteed to finish second in the standings no matter what happens in their finale at Hoopa this Friday night.

Also in the Little 4 last weekend, the Tigers got their second win of the season, beating Hoopa 22-6.

The Big 4, meanwhile, will go down to the final day of the season, with three teams still in the hunt for the conference title.

A 13-13 tie at Husky Field on Friday night saw conference frontrunners Fortuna and St. Bernard’s go to 1-0-1 in conference play.

But the Eureka Loggers also remain in the chase after a 19-0 win over Del Norte at the Redwood Bowl on Saturday evening.

With the win, the Loggers improved to 1-1 in conference play and a victory over Fortuna this Friday night could see them win the title, if Del Norte can also upset St. Bernard’s at Crusader Field on Saturday afternoon.

It’s an intriguing race, but the Loggers will have their hands full matching up against an undefeated Huskies team that is now 7-0-1 overall.
