Seniors step up to lead the Loggers past the Wildcats

Seniors Lorena Hernandez and Angelina Conant combined to score all five goals for Eureka in a 5-3 win over Ferndale in a make-up non-conference game in girls soccer on Monday.

Hernandez finished with a hat trick and Conant added two as the Loggers broke open a tight game with a big second half.

“We came out flat,” Eureka head coach Melania Valdez said. “The girls at halftime were able to identify what was missing/needed to be done and took action in the second half.”

The game was tied 1-1 at the break.

Once again, the Wildcats played the game shorthanded with just 10 players in action because of injuries, but once again they battled.

“We’re operating shorthanded and still competing and still showing up,”Ferndale head coach Bailey Davy said. “If you can score on the big schools and hang with them, that’s a win.”

The industrious Gianna Regli had a good game in midfield and scored one of Ferndale’s goals, with Macie Hagemann and Madison Gossi each also scoring.

Maggie Weiss assisted on two of the goals.

Team captain Michaela Ellsmore also continued to impress in the heart of defense and set numerous Ferndale attacks in motion from the back line.

“Michaela was really solid and she had some great balls forward as well, which is really helpful, especially when you’re down players,” Davy said. “It kind of helps that midfield out.”

The story of the day, however, was the play of the Loggers in the second half, especially Conant and Hernandez.

“They caused some trouble for us,” Davy said of the talented senior tandem.

Valdez felt it was a good team performance after the break.

“Conditions were not in our favor, but ultimately this game presented the reality that each person on the field needs to do their job to make the team successful,” the Eureka coach said. “I’m very proud of the collaboration the girls had at half and the action they took in the second half.”

Both teams resume conference play on Wednesday afternoon.

Eureka travels to McKinleyville and Ferndale plays at Del Norte.
