BOYS SOCCER — Tigers take control, go to 6-0 halfway through league

The Arcata Tigers took a big step toward a league title with a 2-0 win over the Huskies in Fortuna on Saturday.

The win lifts the Tigers to 6-0 halfway through their league schedule and they have now beaten their three biggest rivals in the race for the H-DNL crown, Fortuna, Del Norte and Eureka.

Izaiah Grosveld and Lars Gerdes each scored in the win, with Daniel Hernandez assisting on one of the strikes.

Junior Tanner Kees got the clean sheet in goal.

Both Arcata goals came in the opening half.

“We have a trend of going down in the first half and Arcata wasn’t going to allow us back in,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said. “They played a good match and was the better team today.”

The loss was just the second in league play for the Huskies, who dropped to 4-2.

Elsewhere in league play on Saturday, the Eureka Loggers defeated St. Bernard’s 7-0.

Makai Dennon, Angel Martinez and Isaiah Herbst each scored twice in the win, with Levi Grossman also finding the back of the net.

“We changed our shape up after the Fortuna game (on Wednesday) to something I feel that fits our team a little bit better,” Eureka head coach Tommy Learmouth said. “And we possessed the ball really well against a team that wanted to play physical, and we played really hard.”

Freshman Landon Larson had a breakthrough game in the win, as the Logger improved to 3-3 in league action.

“He’s worked extremely hard in practice and he played an extended role today,” Learmouth said. “And his teammates constantly were supporting him.”

Eureka seniors Luis Rodriguez, Trent Gerber and Will Mooney each also continued to play a key role.

“They are the supportive leaders that we need them to be,” Learmouth added.
