FOOTBALL ROUNDUP — Tigers, Warriors continue to impress; Loggers lose at Windsor

File photo – The Arcata Tigers are 1-0 in the Little 4 after a big win over McKinleyville on Friday night.

Four local varsity football teams were in action on Friday night, including the defending Little 4 champion Arcata Tigers, who kicked off conference play with a big win.

The Tigers scored 30 points in the second quarter alone, including three touchdown runs by junior quarterback Luke Lemke, on their way to a 51-0 win over the McKinleyville Panthers.

Also in action on Friday night, the Del Norte Warriors traveled to the East Bay to play Oakland Tech and came away with an impressive 13-7 win, which was their third straight.

And rounding out the local teams in action under the lights, the Eureka Loggers trailed 35-0 at halftime of their game at Windsor and lost 35-8.

As expected, the Tigers comfortably took care of business against their struggling neighbors to get the defense of their Little 4 title off to a winning start.

The Tigers opened the scoring with a pair of first-quarter TDs, including a touchdown run by Tony Buchanna late in the period.

The outstanding Lemke added three rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, the third of which was set up by a Dayquan Dunn fumble recovery.

Cal Tucker added a fourth touchdown for the Tigers on a run before the quarter was out and they led 43-0 at the break.

Lemke connected with Jackson Strand on a touchdown pass early in the second half to stretch the lead, before a two-point conversion pass to Tucker made it 51-0.

Lennon Geider also had a first-half interception for Arcata.

The win keeps the Tigers unbeaten on the season as they improve to 1-0 in the Little 4 and 5-0 overall.

With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 0-1 and 0-5.

Next weekend McKinleyville hosts Ferndale on Friday night, while Arcata plays at Hoopa on Saturday night.

The Del Norte Warriors, meanwhile, won a hard-fought battle at Oakland Tech to go to 4-2 on the season, and the Crescent City school has quickly put a 1-2 start to the season behind it.

Senior quarterback Aidan Rice scored both of his team’s touchdowns, opening the scoring on a one-yard run on his team’s first possession of the game.

A Greyson Franklin PAT put the visitors up 7-0.

After the home team responded with a second-quarter TD to leave the teams tied 7-7 at halftime, the Warriors pieced together an impressive second half on both sides of the ball.

Rice capped a long drive to start the third quarter when he found the end zone on an impressive 16-yard run.

The PAT was no good and the Warriors led 13-7.

But that was all they would need, thanks to the team defense posting a second-half shutout and the offense piecing together a lengthy seven-minute drive to eat up the clock and close out the game.

The home team was driving well in the third quarter but the Warriors defense took over on downs deep in their own territory after a key tackle by junior lineman Dane Brown forced a fourth-down attempt that failed.

The Del Norte defense held the Bulldogs to just 107 yards of offense for the night, while the Warriors offense was able to control the line of scrimmage with a relentless ground attack.

Ben Borges led Del Norte with 127 yards rushing, while Will McCovey added 86 yards rushing and Rice had 31 yards.

Tobias Meyers (10 yards) and Landon Balent (30 yards) each had a reception.

Del Norte has a bye next week before hosting Eureka in a non-conference game in two weeks.

The Del Norte JVs did not fare as well, falling 32-0 to Oakland Tech.

The loss was the first since week one for the young Warriors, who dropped to 3-2-1.

The Loggers, meanwhile, faced a tough matchup at Windsor.

The Jaguars are ranked No. 11 in the entire North Coast Section, according to MaxPreps, and quickly took control of the game with 35 unanswered first-half points.

The Loggers responded after the break with their only touchdown of the night when quarterback Kyle Johnston connected with receiver Eddie Gonzalez on an 18-yard score.

With the loss, which was the team’s second straight, Eureka dropped to 1-4 on the season.

Windsor improved to 5-0.

The Loggers will try to bounce back when they play at Biggs next Friday in what will be their fifth straight road game.

The local weekend action continues on Saturday when the Ferndale Wildcats entertain the Hoopa Warriors in their Little 4 opener, with kickoff set for 2 p.m.

The schools’ JV teams also play at 11:30 a.m.

The Fortuna Huskies will also be in action, traveling to Petaluma play St. Vincent de Paul at 2 p.m.

St. Bernard’s and South Fork have byes this week.

  1. JV Loggers held it 0-0 until end of the 3rd. Windsor ended up coming out on top winning 13-0. First lost for our boys. We gonna come back and win this game out in Biggs next week. Go Loggers!

  2. Although I live in Sonoma County, but from and grew up in Humboldt, football here is just different. No Humboldt County team can touch Windsor or Cardinal Newman.
