Grimmett leads the way for Redwoods at GVC preview

CR Athletics – Anna Grimmett

The College of the Redwoods cross country teams got the new season under way over the weekend, traveling to Shasta College to compete in the Golden Valley Conference preview meet.

Anna Grimmett led a solid performance for the Corsairs, who had two women place in the top six, which would be good enough to earn all-conference honors for each if they can repeat that later in the season.

Grimmett placed fourth overall, followed by teammate Josephine Kent in sixth.

And CR head coach Reed Elmore believes both runners, who were competing for the first time this season, can improve on that as the fall progresses.

“It was a hot day, which affected them,” Elmore said. “Under good conditions they’ll move up the pack.”

As a team, the CR women placed second.

In the men’s race, meanwhile, Aiden Davis was the only competitor for CR.

The former McKinleyville Panther placed 17th overall, but Elmore believes he can also improve on that.

“He was also affected by the heat and went out too fast,” the CR coach said. “The goal for him is to get top seven at conference. I feel he can do that if he runs a smarter race with better conditions.”
