By Ray Hamill — This weekend will be a relatively quiet one for local football with four of the nine H-DNL varsity teams on a bye.
With the Little 4 set to kick off next week, the Arcata Tigers and Hoopa Warriors will not be in action this weekend, while the South Fork Cubs and Eureka Loggers also have a break.
But that doesn’t mean there are no games on tap.
In fact, there are two all-local games scheduled for the weekend, as well as a big showdown at the Redwood Bowl for College of the Redwoods.
The action, as usual, gets under way on Friday night, with the Del Norte Warriors traveling to McKinleyville to take on the Panthers.
Del Norte is 2-2 after a lopsided victory over Skyline in Crescent City last weekend and the Warriors will be looking to make it two straight wins for the first time this season.
That game will be broadcast live on KPOD 97.9 FM and through DelNorteSports.com.
The Panthers, meanwhile, are still looking for their first win of the campaign and are 0-3 after a tough loss to University Prep last week.
And speaking of University Prep, they return to Redding this weekend to host a Fortuna Huskies team that likely can’t wait to put last week’s Milk Can disappointment behind them.
This could be a great matchup between two very programs and two teams that have serious playoff ambitions.

The Panthers will host Del Norte on Friday night.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
The action continues on Saturday afternoon, with two big games on tap for local fans here on the North Coast.
St. Bernard’s will welcome the Ferndale Wildcats to Crusader Field in a showdown between two of the three remaining unbeaten teams in the H-DNL.
The Crusaders improved to 4-0 last week with a big 45-13 win at Clear Lake, while the Wildcats are now 3-0 after their 29-26 win in the Milk Can game at Coach Carlson Wildcat Field.
Kickoff on Saturday is set for 2 p.m. in what be the latest chapter of this storied rivalry, with the schools’ JV teams also playing each other at 11:30 a.m.
The varsity game will be broadcast live in The Beat 95.1 FM
And rounding out the list of games this weekend, College of the Redwoods will host San Jose at the Redwood Bowl in Arcata as the Corsairs look to rebound from a disappointing performance last week.
The Corsairs traveled to Monterey Peninsula and lost 21-7, suffering their first defeat of the season.
CR comes into this weekend’s game with a record of 2-1.
The game will also be streamed live on CR’s YouTube channel and it will be broadcast live on 107.3 FM and 1340 AM.
