JV FOOTBALL — Big 4 teams riding high as we head into week five

By Ray Hamill — It’s been a good year so far for the Big 4 JV football teams.

All four of the conference teams won their games last weekend and all four now have winning records as we head towards the upcoming conference schedule.

Fortuna and St. Bernard’s have been the most impressive and both are unbeaten after four games.

Last week, the Crusaders kept their fast start going with a 28-6 win at Clear Lake, while the Huskies continued to shine with a 24-14 win over Ferndale in the JV Milk Can showdown.

The Del Norte Warriors and Eureka Loggers also enjoyed a successful weekend.

The young Del Norte players have not lost since an opening night defeat at Fortuna, and they made it three straight wins with a 32-0 shutout victory over Skyline in Crescent City.

The Eureka JVs also won at Willow Glen, defeating the Rams 14-0 in San Jose.

All four Little 4 teams were also in action last week in what was a busy couple of days for the H-DNL schools.

And two of them posted their first wins of the season.

Hoopa traveled to Trinity and came home with a 43-0 win, improving to 1-2.

The Arcata JVs, meanwhile, also won at Oakland by a score of 28-21 and improved to 1-3 on the season.

The McKinleyville Panthers also enjoyed some success, tying University Prep 14-14 and improving to 0-2-1.

All in all, it was a good weekend for the H-DNL JV teams, with only one of the eight losing, and that defeat came against another H-DNL team.

Five of the league’s JV teams will be in action again this weekend, including two all-local matchups.

On Friday night, the Del Norte Warriors will try to keep their winning streak going when they travel to Mack High to play the Panthers, while the young Fortuna players will try to make it five straight wins to start the season when they play at University Prep.

And rounding out this week’s action, the Ferndale Wildcats will try to bounce back from their first loss of the season and hand the Crusaders their first loss when they meet at St. Bernard’s on Saturday morning.
