The Fortuna Huskies did a nice job rebounding from a tough loss in Crescent City last week with a victory over McKinleyville in an exciting H-DNL boys soccer game on Tuesday.
It did, however, take them a half to warm up to the challenge.
After giving up two unanswered goals in the opening 40 minutes, the Huskies responded with four second-half goals on the way to a 4-2 win.
The win lifts the Fortuna boys to 3-1 in league play and into second in the standings, trailing only unbeaten league leaders Arcata.
The Tigers also were in action on Tuesday, winning 5-0 at Eureka and improving to 4-0.
“We lacked intensity and movement (in the first hall,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said. “We made some adjustments at the half to swing the momentum.”
Kaden Lodes was instrumental in the win and finished with a hat trick of goals.
At the back, Brandon Cruz and Owen Wallen played well and helped anchor a defensive unit that shut out the Panthers for the second half.
The loss was the third in league play for the Panthers, who dropped to 0-3-1.
Brayden Adkins had a memorable afternoon in the loss after netting his first high school goal, while Becker Rine continued to impress and scored McKinleyville’s second goal.
Andy Garcia assisted on Rine’s strike.
In addition to strong performances from Adkins and Rine, the ever-consistent Gaelen Creighton continued to impress at the back.
Once again no details or statistics were available for the Arcata Tigers.
As always, coaches are encouraged to reach out to Humboldt Sports with details of their games if they want their players to receive some coverage.
