Ferndale girls enjoy back-to-back victories in volleyball

The Ferndale Wildcats posted a pair of impressive victories in volleyball this week, beating Fortuna on Monday night and following that with a win over Hayfork on Tuesday.

The Ferndale girls got the better of Hayfork by a score of 25-10, 25-22, 25-15.

Clara Albee, who has been one of Ferndale’s most consistent performers early in the new season, finished with four aces and three tips, while teammate Izzy Ellsmore added six aces and three kills.

Saige Machado and Danica Dowd both also impressed for the Cats.

Macahdo had three kills, three blocks and four tips, while Dowd added five aces and four kills.

Rounding out a good all-around team performance, Amaya Mattews had seven kills, a tip and a block and Yajaira Cantu-Mendez finished with three aces and two kills.

“The girls came out swinging, they were ready to play,” head coach Jessi Grant said of the performance. “I really like how they are coming together. They’re very supportive and they’re working hard. I’m very proud of them.”

Albee, in particular, displayed a lot of hustle in the win, according to her coach, while Mattews continued to be aggressive at the net and Dowd did a good job with her serving and hit placement.

On Monday the Cats beat the Huskies in four sets, 18-25, 25-22, 24-14, 25-21.

Dowd finished with eight aces, five kills and two saves, while Albee had three aces, three saves and five tips.

Macahdo also impressed at the service line and had seven aces as well as two kills, while Mattews added four kills, five tips and three blocks.

Rounding out a good team effort, Cantu-Mendez had two aces and a kill, while Olivia Gossi had two kills, two saves and a tip.

“The girls played very aggressive,” the head coach said of Monday’s performance. “There was a lot of scrambling and they all came together as a team.”
