JV ROUNDUP — Loggers, Huskies, Cats and Crusaders start strong

By Ray Hamill — All eight H-DNL JV football teams were in action on opening weekend, including three all-local showdowns.

And it was a good start to the new campaign for four of them, including two schools who opened with shutout victories.

Last season’s Big 4 champs, the Fortuna Huskies, got an early-season win over the team that pushed them all the way for the championship a year ago.

Facing conference rival Del Norte in their opener, the Huskies won 19-0 on Friday night.

Perhaps the most impressive showing of the weekend was that of the Eureka Loggers.

The young Eureka players also enjoyed a shutout victory, getting the better of the Arcata Tigers 26-0 at the Redwood Bowl the following night.

The St. Bernard’s Crusaders also won their season-opener, traveling to Hoopa and coming home with an 18-10 victory over the defending co-champs of the Little 4.

In 2023, the Warriors shared the conference crown with the Ferndale Wildcats, who got the new season off to a winning start with a 29-8 win over Fort Bragg at Ferndale High School.

And rounding out a busy weekend for the local contingent of teams, the McKinleyville Panthers fell to Kelseyville in their opener, losing 20-12.

Most of the local JV teams will be in action again this weekend.

The Loggers play at Shasta, while the Huskies will play the Tigers at Mack High.

Also this weekend, St. Bernard’s hosts Willits, Etna plays at Hoopa, Del Norte hosts Ashland and Ferndale plays at Fall River.
