By Ray Hamill — With the local high school football season now just a week away, The Beat 95.1 FM will once again be broadcasting several games this fall.
The local radio station is scheduled to bring fans a total of 11 regular-season games, as well as some North Coast Section playoff action later in the fall.
And the schedule includes games featuring seven of the nine H-DNL varsity teams.
The action gets under way with a doubleheader of all-local games on opening weekend.
The season kicks off with a rare Thursday night showdown in Hoopa between the Warriors and St. Bernard’s Crusaders, and Tag Wotherspoon will be on hand to call the action.
The following night, Big 4 rivals Fortuna and Del Norte will face off in a non-conference game in The Friendly City, with Wotherspoon and his crew once again on hand to bring us the game.
Later in the season, the Beat 95.1 will also broadcast five of the six Big 4 conference games.
On Oct. 25, Wotherspoon will be in the booth calling the action from the all-Eureka clash between Eureka and St. Bernard’s, and the following day he’ll broadcast the second showdown between the Huskies and Warriors in Crescent City as two of the three defending co-champs face off in their conference openers.
Conference games between Fortuna and St. Bernard’s, Fortuna and Eureka and St. Bernard’s and Del Norte will also be broadcast live.
The NCS playoffs kick off on Nov. 15.
Other teams that will feature on the 2024 broadcasts include McKinleyville at Fortuna on Sept. 13 and the Milk Can Game between the Huskies and Wildcats in Ferndale on Sept. 21.
The Wildcats, who are defending state champs this year, will feature on the radio on back-to-back weekends.
Seven days after playing the Huskies, the Cats will travel to Eureka to play traditional rival St. Bernard’s in a game that will also be broadcast live.
The pregame shows begin 15 minutes before kickoff on every broadcast.
