ATHLETE AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Arredondo, Giants enjoy big weeks

By Ray Hamill — With the summer baseball season winding down, this week we recognize a Little League standout and a local American Legion team.

Our athlete of the week goes to McKinleyville’s Teoh Arredondo, one of the top young players on the North Coast and a player who appears to have a bright future ahead of him.

Our team of the week, meanwhile goes to the Northern Humboldt Giants who enjoyed an outstanding summer season, including going 5-0 at last weekend’s Humboldt Eagles Tournament in Eureka.

Arredondo has played a key role in leading the McKinleyville 12-year-old All-Stars to the NorCal state tournament in Madera.

The young standout was arguably the player of the game for the Mack All-Stars at last weekend’s Section 2 tournament.

McKinleyville won all three of its games in tournament play on the way to the championship, including a 1-0 win over Foothill in the decider on Monday.

Not only did Arredondo pitch a complete game for the victory on the hill in the final game, but he also scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning.

Arredondo, who is also an outstanding young middle infielder, walked to reach base before stealing his way to second and then scoring on a Ty Wade double.

The Giants, meanwhile, capped a very impressive summer season by winning the championship at the Eagles 17U tourney.

After securing a come-from-behind 6-3 win over Lassen in their final pool game, the Giants would go on to beat Legacy Baseball out of Redding 8-1 in Sunday’s championship game.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Teoh Arredondo

McKinleyville Little League

Arredondo has been one of the standouts on a very impressive McKinleyville 12-year-old All-Star team this summer.

Whether he’s playing in the infield, on the mound or at the plate, the young McKinleyville player always seems to be one of the best players on the field.

In his team’s final game at the Section tournament this week, Arredondo set the tone on the mound and threw a three-hit complete-game for the win, with no walks and 13 strikeouts.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Northern Humboldt Giants

Head coach Eric Agliolo has done an outstanding job in his first year in charge of the team, as the Giants have set the standard for the local American Legion clubs this summer.

Agliolo has gotten the best out of players like Arcata High’s Ben Lukens, a recent Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week, and a deep lineup that has shown few if any weak spots.

The Giants capped their big summer with this week’s tournament championship, with a roster that features players from six of the H-DNL schools, all of whom should be better prepared for next year’s high school season.
