By Ray Hamill — This year’s Humboldt Sports Little 4 Boys Athlete of the year epitomized what it is to be a great athlete in more ways than one.

Not only did he succeed on the field of competition more than most, but he did so in more sports than anyone else in the conference and he was a great teammate along the way.

And that’s what separates Ferndale’s Prescott Langer from the chasing pack and what makes him our choice for Little 4 Boys Athlete of the Year.

Langer played pivotal roles for the Wildcats over the past 12 months in football, basketball and baseball, leading the school to tremendous success in 2023/24.

He took home more silverware than just about anyone else in the entire H-DNL, including a state winners medal in football and North Coast Section medals in baseball and football.

And that’s not all.

The sensational sophomore also starred in rodeo, where he went to the state finals in both team roping and calf roping and was voted the Wildcats’ MVP in the sport.

And the best is yet to come for the Ferndale standout, who was one of just two sophomores on our list of seven finalists for the award, along with fellow Wildcat Tanner Pidgeon.

But that’s not the most impressive thing about Langer.

“His physical stature and physical tools are an advantage,” Ferndale baseball coach Justin Andersen said. “But for me, his motivation for his teammates to succeed is something that you don’t see every day any more.

“He’s strongly driven for the whole Wildcat community to succeed.

“He’s a great teammate and he cares about his teammates. I would say he puts his teammates ahead of himself in a lot of ways.”

The good news for the Wildcats is that Langer has two more years of high school competition ahead of him, and with what he has already shown us there’s every reason to believe he should continue to grow as an athlete and continue to leave his mark on Ferndale High School sports.

“He is essentially a four-sport athlete,” Andersen added. “If Prescott focused on one or two sports I can only imagine how good he would be. His ability to balance multiple things and still be as successful as he is (is impressive).”

Congratulations to Prescott Langer and all of our finalists.

A huge shout out to the local businesses that have stepped up to help sponsor this year’s awards, a group that includes Mendes Supply, DelReka Distributing, Bode Construction, The Humboldt Fence Company, and Chris Prior of Coldwell Banker Cutten Realty, whose generosity ensures all six award winners will receive trophies to honor their accomplishments.

In addition to the 2024 Humboldt Sports Little 4 Boys Athlete of the Year, we’ll also be naming our other end-of-year award winners this weekend, including our Little 4 Girls Athlete of the Year, as well as our Coach of the Year and Team of the Year and the Big 5 Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year.
