Timeline for announcing our end-of-year high school awards

By Ray Hamill — It’s almost time to announce the winners of the Humboldt Sports end-of-year high school awards.

Now that the finalists have been announced for all six awards, the winners will all be named over the next three days.

The categories include Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, Big 5 Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year and Little 4 Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year.

First up, on Friday evening we will announce the Little 4 Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year.

On Saturday, we will announce our Coach and Team of the Year.

And finally, on Sunday evening we will name the Big 5 Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year.

All six winners will receive a trophy to commemorate their achievement.

And a big shoutout to our awards sponsors, including Mendes Supply, DelReka Distributing, Bode Construction, The Humboldt Fence Company and Chris Prior of Coldwell Banker Cutten Realty.

The complete list of finalists includes …

Little 4 Girls Athlete of the Year — Hannah Finck (St. Bernard’s), Laila Florvilus (St. Bernard’s), Cloe McConnell (South Fork), Tinnley Pidgeon (Ferndale), Madelyn Shanahan (St. Bernard’s) and Caidence Young (South Fork).

Little 4 Boys Athlete of the Year — Shevy Bero-Van Meter (South Fork), Justin Freitas (South Fork), Jack Kramer (St. Bernard’s), Prescott Langer (Ferndale), Lyle McKinnon (Hoopa), Tanner Pidgeon (Ferndale) and Kyler Smith (St. Bernard’s).

Coach of the Year — Justin Andersen (Ferndale baseball), Cass Bell (Arcata Wrestling), Mike Dobrec (McKinleyville Baseball), Clint McClurg (Ferndale Football), Cliff Napoleon (Eureka Girls Basketball), Clinton Schaad (Del Norte Wrestling), and Matt Tomlin (St. Bernard’s Football, Girls Basketball and Baseball) 

Team of the Year — Del Norte Softball, Del Norte Volleyball, Del Norte Wrestling, Eureka Basketball, Ferndale Baseball, Ferndale Football, McKinleyville Baseball, St. Bernard’s Girls Basketball and St. Bernard’s Volleyball

Big 5 Girls Athlete of the Year — Allie Cox (Fortuna), Chloe Cox (Fortuna), McKenna Curtis (Del Norte), Kaitlin Giacone (Eureka), Isis Poteet (Eureka) and Gabby Watson (McKinleyville).

Big 5 Boys Athlete of the Year — Deken Hanks (Del Norte), Jake Houseworth (Fortuna), Luke Lemke (Arcata), Russell Pascascio (Fortuna), Lyon Rigden (Del Norte) and Colton Schaad (Del Norte).
