St. Bernard’s senior Madelyn Shanahan closed out an outstanding high school career in sports with an impressive showing at the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis on Friday.

And she saved her best for last.

The multi-sport senior standout smashed her previous PR with a throw of 132’ 2” in the girls discus and barely missed out on qualifying for Saturday’s final.

Shanahan, who also was a league MVP in soccer and volleyball and an all-state player in basketball, placed 14th in the state preliminaries, just two places from advancing.

Her previous PR in the discus was 121’ 9”.

Shanahan was one of two H-DNL athletes to compete at the prestigious state meet on Friday, along with teammate Laila Florvilus.

The St. Bernard’s junior competed in the girls 100 meter hurdles after winning the event at last week’s North Coast Section Meet of Champions.

Florvilus placed seventh in her heat and 21st overall with a time of 15.31 seconds.

Her PR time in the event is 14.95 seconds, which she set at the MOC.

Fortuna senior Russell Pascascio also qualified for the state championships in the boys high jump, but he did travel because of his high school graduation ceremony on Friday night.

Pascascio won the high jump at last week’s MOC.
