By Ray Hamill — With one North Coast Section championship already secured, the big question now for H-DNL fans is can any of the other five remaining teams add to that haul this week?

The South Fork Cubs won the section Division-6 softball championship over the weekend with a 12-1 win at California School for the Deaf in Fremont.

Four other H-DNL teams will continue their playoff run on Tuesday and Wednesday, including the Ferndale boys who will host Point Arena in the Division-6 baseball championship game on Wednesday evening.

Also still in contention for a section crown and a place in next week’s CIF NorCal state playoffs are the McKinleyville boys and the Fortuna, Del Norte and St. Bernard’s girls.

Having already advanced to their championship game, the Ferndale boys are best positioned to give the H-DNL a second section title this spring.

The Wildcats, who have lost just twice all season, are the top seeds in the D-6 bracket and will host the Pirates at 5 p.m.

Ferndale is looking for a first NCS championship in baseball since winning back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.

The McKinleyville boys are the only other local baseball team still in the chase and the No. 3 seeds in the Division-4 bracket will travel to play No. 2 Piedmont on Wednesday, with first pitch also set for 5 p.m.

In softball, meanwhile, H-DNL fans will be hoping to see an all-local Division-4 final, with two local teams playing semifinals on different sides of the bracket.

On Tuesday night, the No. 4 seed Fortuna girls will be hoping to upset the odds at No. 1 St. Helena.

First pitch is set for 5 p.m.

The other semifinal, which will take place in Crescent City on Wednesday night, will feature No. 2 Del Norte and No. 3 Salesian.

That game is also set for 5 p.m.

The McKinleyville Panthers will play their NCS semifinal on Wednesday evening.

And rounding out the upcoming action, in Division-5 softball St. Bernard’s Crusaders will entertain Lower Lake in semifinal action on Tuesday evening at Samoa.

Both teams are coming off upset road victories against higher seeds over the weekend.

The No. 6 Crusaders won 6-4 at No. 3 St. Vincent de Paul, while the No. 7 Trojans won 5-3 at No. 2 Cloverdale.

Tuesday’s game is also set for 5 p.m.

All section winners, including the South Fork girls, will advance to next week’s state NorCal playoffs.

Those brackets, which also will include some at-large berths, will be released this weekend.
