The Cal Poly Humboldt softball team’s hopes of making the postseason took a hit on Saturday after they lost both games in a doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Jacks lost 5-4 in game one and 5-3 in game two.

With the two losses, the Humboldt women dropped to seventh in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings and out of the playoff spots with four games remaining.

However, they still remain in contention for one of the six conference tournament spots, just two wins behind Cal State East Bay in sixth.

The Jacks close out the regular season with a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino in Arcata next weekend.

Izzy Starr and Vanessa Saltos led the Jacks offense in game one on Saturday and each had two hits, including a double by Starr.

Shelby Shanks also had a double in the loss, while former Eureka Logger McKenna Beach finished 1-for-3 and former McKinleyville Panther Grace Rosebrook scored a run as a pinch runner.

The game remained close throughout, but a three-run third inning by the home team proved to be the difference.

The Humboldt women took a two-run lead in game two in the top of the second, before the home team battled back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In a back-and-forth game, however, the Jacks would tie things up with a run in the top of the seventh, before the Toros secured a walk-off win with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Starr had two more hits for Humboldt, as did teammate Hailey Meisenbach, while former Eureka Logger Sadie Hampton scored one of the team’s runs.

The Jacks are now 23-22 overall and 13-15 in the CCAA.
