Several locals feature among the NCS leaders in track and field

By Ray Hamill — Six H-DNL athletes are currently ranked in the top 10 in the North Coast Section in their top track and field events, including one standout who is ranked in the top six in two different events.

Indeed, a remarkable year for St. Bernard’s junior Laila Florvilus its showing no signs of slowing down.

After recently being named the CalHiSports Division-4 girls basketball player of the year, Florvilus is enjoying an outstanding spring on the track and is the top-ranked girl in the section in the 100 meters hurdles with a time of 15.63 seconds.

The standout athlete also has the sixth best time in the NCS in the 300m hurdles with a time of 47.09 seconds.

Both of those times were set at separate meets at Del Norte in the past seven days.

The next highest ranked H-DNL athlete is Fortuna’s Russell Pascascio, who has the third best mark in the boys high jump.

Pascascio’s best jump of the season was 6’ 4”, which he set at last month’s meet at Cal Poly Humboldt and is just one and a quarter inch behind top-ranked Grady Wachob of Benicia.

Eureka’s Emily Pesch, meanwhile, is also among the top ranked girls in the high jump.

Her season-best jump of 5’ 3”, which she set at the Stanford Invitational on March 30, is tied for fifth best in the section with four other girls.

Pesch’s teammate Isabella Claussen is ranked in the top 10 in the NCS in two different events.

The standout junior, who has placed first in the shot put in all three league meets this spring, is sixth best in the section in the event with a throw of 33’ 11.5”, which she set last week at McKinleyville.

She also has the 10th best NCS mark in the discus with a throw of 105’ 8”.

And rounding out the impressive locals ranked the top 10 in the section are Ferndale’s Issak Kasso and Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg.

Kasso has the seventh best time in the boys 110m hurdles with a time of 15.46 seconds, which he set at Wednesday’s league meet at Del Norte.

Collenberg has the 10th best NCS throw this spring in the discus, with a 140’ 9.5”, which he set at Del Norte last Friday.

He is the second highest ranked sophomore in the event.

The next H-DNL meet is scheduled for next Wednesday at Fortuna.

The league championships will take place at McKinleyville High School on May 4, with the NCS championships a week later.
