They say hitting is contagious, and that was certainly the case for the South Fork girls in a Little 4 softball doubleheader at Hoopa on Friday.

After dropping game one 10-8 and committing too many errors in the process, the Cubs responded well with an 8-3 win in game two, earning a second conference doubleheader split in five days.

The Cubs, who also split with Ferndale on Monday, are now 2-4 in the Little 4.

The performance in game two at Hoopa, according to head coach Lisa Todd, was one of the team’s best of the season, most notably at the plate.

After struggling at the plate through the early part of the season, the Cubs’ bats had some success at Hoopa.

A Makenzie Brewer home run in the bottom of the third got the party started.

“(After that) the rest of the team started to hit,” Todd said. “And it was one of our best hitting games, something I’ve been waiting for them to do. We’ve been struggling at the plate.”

Brewer finished 2-for-5 in the win, while teammate Molly Perkins was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk and Cloe McConnell was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.

Mackenzie Coleman also made some noise at the plate and went 2-for-4 with a double and had a stolen base.

Todd moved senior standout Caidence Young from the infield to the outfield and she had an immediate impact in her new position.

“He ability to get to the ball saved us from Hoopa scoring a few times,” Todd said. “She made some crucial catches out there for us.”

The Cubs led early in game one, but errors proved costly.

However, several players contributed at the plate.

McConnell finished 3-for-4 with a double, while Perkins went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and Coleman went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

In addition to her impactful play in the outfield, Young also was 2-for-4.

In the pitcher’s circle, McConnell had five strikeouts and gave up one walk.

Unfortunately, yet again we have no stats for the Hoopa girls.

Humboldt Sports has reached out to the team, but the coaches have yet to respond with any details from their games.
